There were around dozen of Textile Mills in and around Madurai functioning for a long time and like M/s. Madura Coats, M/s. Thiyagaraja Mills. During British Period. M/s.Madura Coats employees were provided with Rail transport to their work spot from their quarters free of cost. M/sFenners(India) Ltd., is one of the oldest unit manufacturing rubber conveyor belt. M/s. TVS Sundaram Iyengar sons & Ltd., Body building and automobile service units.

AGRICULTURE AND AGRO PROCESSING INDUSTRIES:

There are few good agro-based industries like, M/s. Hiran Agroceutics-manufacturing Allo vera products, M/s. C.P. Plantations-manufacturing Allo Vera Products, M/s. Keo Foods P Ltd-manufacturing Gerkin Pickles and there is one M/s. ADR Cold Storage- in Madurai District which are all agro based industries.

There is one Good Aavin Milk Diary Producing Pasteurizing Milk Plant at Madurai

Few Jessamine Concentrate units are existing in Madurai District. Such as M/s. S.N. Aroma (P) Ltd., Parambupatti, M/s. J.R.K. Aromatics, Parambupatti, M/s. S.M. Aroma, Vedar Puliyankulam. Jessamine is air lifted to Bombay, Madras and even to foreign countries from Madurai

MAJOR INITIATIVES SHAPING UP MADURAI DISTRICT:

1. Road Connectivity:

National Highway Authority, Government of India has undertaken the work of converting all the existing two lanes NH as Four lane roads which is running in between Bangalore & Chennai to Madurai and also in Madurai to Kanniyakumari & Tuticorin. The Project is expected to be completed before March-2009. It will provide better infrastructure for transportation of goods and movement of containers to the nearest Tuticorin port.

2. Air Connectivity:

Madurai is well connected in air route with important destination. Government of India has sanctioned the project of converting existing domestic airport as International Airport which will attract the Multinational companies to invest in Madurai. The Airport authority of India already taken effective steps for the expansion Programme Domestic Airport into International Airport.

We have got aiport here in Madurai with run way of 7500 feet and is getting expanded to about 12500 feet for accommodating International flights landing.

3. Rail Connectivity:

Madurai is well connected with nearby district as well as through out the state which facilitate easy transportation goods in this District. More number of trains passing through all the direction from Madurai. Railway Department has taken efforts to bring Double Broad Gauge line in between Madurai to Dindgul. This Double Line Borad Gauge line will increase the traffic and as a result more number of trains can be run to ease the congestions. Doubling of broad gauge line from Madurai to chennai is under work. Shortly forther Electrification work from Madurai to Chennai.

4. Ports:

Tuticorin port is one of the 10 major ports in the country and is emerging as an important trade hub for the southern region. The port has the distinction of being one of the few in the country to attract mainline container vessels.

While the present road connectivity to the nine CFS s in Tuticorin is good, it would further improve with four laning of NH7A currently in progress and proposed four laning of NH45B. The road-rail connectivity status and initiatives as identified in a report by the Committee of Secretaries of Infrastructure is presented in the Exhibit below. Implementation of these initiatives will further strengthen the position of Tuticorin as an important gateway of trade for the southern part of the country.

5. ELECTRICITY:

Madurai District is getting electricity from TNEB as well as from a private electricity company namely, Madurai Power Corporation, Samayanallur. Further, TNEB authorities stated that more number of private companies are come forward to setup power generation unit in Madurai District to provide adequate power to the needy industries.

MAJOR PROJECTS SHAPING UP MADURAI DISTRICT

CAR MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY WILL BE A VAIBLE ONE AT MADURAI.

Madurai is a ideal destination for establishing a CAR Manufacturing unit. There are so many Industries involved in the manufacturing of automobile spare parts, Madurai is well connected with transport facility. It has good air connectivity also at Tuticorin Port is situated just 125 km away from Madurai, see route is ensured. The widening of National Highway around Madurai has improved the road traffic facilities. There is conducive atmosphere in Madurai District for setting up such a mega unit.

The Secretary to Government, Industries Department , the SIPCOT Managing Director and the District Collector had identified the land to the extent of 2000 Acres at Sivarakottai Village, Tirumangalam Taluk for the attraction car manufacturing industry.

Madurai District needs the progress of a multinational Company, in order to utilize the huge employment potential both skilled & semi skilled available here.

The Government of Tamilnadu may invite the Leading car manufacturing company to establish their assembling manufacturing unit in the selected area of Madurai District.
